The strategies and techniques thatarediscussed in the workshop are suitable for children with a wide variety of challenges: anger, anxiety, depression, non-compliance, disruptive behavior, and social skill deficits.Dr. Yorke discusses play therapy, story-telling, Bibliotherapy, and the use of games. A variety of gamesare covered - from checkers and Candy Land to games specifically developed for counseling and play therapy. The focus in this workshop is on effectively engaging children. Dr. Yorke addresses key aspects in engagement, such as initial contact with the child, working with parents, resistance, cheating, and including siblings and friends.
Participants learn practical and engaging strategies that they can begin using immediately and are suitable for most children, including children with ADHD, Major Depression, Generalized Anxiety, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Dr. Yorke also discusses strategies for working with preschoolers. A detailed course handbook is included as a PDF file on the DVD. About the presenter
Dr. Yorke is a Licensed Psychologist and has been in private practice in Austin, Texas for over twenty years. He and his wife co-founded Austin Behavioral Health Center which provides play therapy and assessment services to children and adolescents. Dr. Yorke is also President and founder of childtherapytoys.com. He is author of My First Therapy Game, The Social and Emotional Competence Game, The Social and Emotional Competence Card Game, and My Medication Workbook. He has presented workshops on storytelling, ADHD, child therapy, assessment, Bipolar Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and the use of games in child and play therapy.
