Journey to Friendsville is designed with the busy counselor in mind. Kids learn social skills and how to develop rewarding friendships in 15 minute increments as they journey on the game board towards the town of Friendsville. This research, in addition to showing that anger breeds optimism, has shown that the anger makes people:

exceedingly optimistic about the success of their own actions,

eager to act quickly, and careless in their analyses of the situations that cause the anger. The above is true of most angry people, not just those who are prone to anger or violence. Blame plays an especially important role. Angry people feel an urgent need to assign responsibility for the event that caused the anger. The blame causes more anger, and the anger results in more intense blame. Blame and anger feed off of each other in this recursive relationship, resulting in even greater mistakes caused by the factors outlined above. Learning anger control skills, such as delaying action by counting to ten or self-talk can help prevent bad decisions; however, direct knowledge of how anger affects the decision making process can give individuals an extremely useful tool to avoid all the mistakes listed above. Based on the popular card game, Go Fish, this game helps players build their self-esteem by sharing their own efforts, accomplishments, and persistence. The interactive play further builds self-esteem by strengthening social and conversational skills. There are two decks of 50 cards; one for each grade level. The game differs from classic go fish in that players must answer a question before they can accept a requested card. Instead of numbers on the cards they all have fun fish names and pictures. Left uncontrolled, anxiety causes not only personal distress, but also can interfere with school success. Children who suffer from excessive worry and anxiety have difficulty with school attendance and school performance; they tend to avoid social activities causing them to be neglected by peers. They also tend to experience frequent somatic symptoms and feelings of low self-worth.

Remote Control Anxiety Control game uses cognitive behavioral therapy to help combat anxiety. Its use of relaxation techniques like muscle relaxation, deep breathing, and visualization are some strategies to help relieve anxiety. The game contains two decks of 40 cards. One for elementary school students and one for middle school students. Players use remote control symbols which focus on three essential skills for controlling anxiety:

POWER ON for positive self-talk.

PAUSE for identification of a desired relaxation technique.

REWIND to describe a time in the past when worry/stress was successfully overcome.

The game uses the above remote control symbols to facilitate learning the skills. There are both competitive and cooperative versions for grades 1-5 and for grades 6-9. The two age groups have separate decks of cards. During the game, players read very brief case studies adapted from real-life scenarios of anxious or worried thoughts of children. Players then practice one of the three essential skills: they POWER ON for positive self-talk, breaking the negative thought cycle that can lead to escalated worry/stress; they PAUSE and either act out or describe a relaxation technique, which helps them to feel better emotionally; or they REWIND and describe a time in the past when they overcame a similar worry or stress successfully.
