Description: Real Friends is an educational and therapeutic board game designed to give adolescents the knowledge and skills they need to successfully navigate the world of cliques, shifting relationships, dating, and the pressures and consequences of risky behavior at parties. The importance of maintaining mutual respect in all types of relationships is stressed. Players learn how to be a real friend, to resist negative peer pressure from friends and other classmates, and to strive to be themselves instead of trying to fit the unrealistic cookie cutter mold of the 'popular' girl or guy. Although they find themselves dealing with a range of social issue dilemmas commonly faced in school, they often don't talk about these issues with someone who can give helpful and reliable guidance. This game is a way for clients and students to get this guidance and to learn how to deal with these issues before they face them and risk making mistakes that they will regret later.
1. Learn how to enter the world of dating and treat others with respect and consideration.
2. Learn the dangers and pressures towards risky behaviors at parties.
4. Learn the responsibilities of friendship.
5. Learn how to deal with peer pressure and the 'need' to be popular.
6. Learn how to be an individual despite pressures to conform to the media concept of the perfect male or female.
The game board represents a bird's eye view of a school. The players have schedules, and they have to visit the various classrooms and playing field in order to complete the game. As they move around the school they pick and answer cards with open-ended questions. There are three decks of cards:
Parties and Dating - Deals with pressure and risky behavior at parties and the importance of establishing and maintaining mutual respect in dating relationships.
All about Guys - Deals with the pitfalls of maintaining a 'macho' image, and successful strategies for maintaining positive relationships with both genders.
All about Girls - Deals with the pressures on girls to conform to the ideal image of the unassertive, thin, and popular girl. Strategies for establishing and maintaining positive relationships with friends of both genders are stressed.
There are three kinds of questions: For True-False questions players answer 'true' or 'false' and earn extra points for giving an explanation.
For Rate the Action questions, players rate a fictitious student's reaction to a difficult situation as 'good', 'fair', or 'poor'. Then they earn extra points by giving an explanation and, if the action was fair or poor, say what they would do instead.
For Open-Ended questions, players give an answer and sometimes act out a good solution to the situation.
