Description: A Day in the Life is a therapeutic and educational board game designed to teach important social and communication skills. It is designed for students in grades 5-8. Alison, an eighth grader, faces a difficult day. She has to go to a teacher and ask to redo a term paper because she got the assignment wrong and received a D. A friend yells at her for not inviting her to a party. Her parents want her to stop seeing one of her best friends, and another friend needs advice on a boy she likes. Alison needs good social and communication skills to make it through the day, and the players have to give her guidance at every turn. The players help Alison be assertive yet respectful with adults, disagree without lowering self-esteem, show empathy, be persuasive by effectively using facts, etc.
Social and Communication skills are difficult to teach using traditional learning designs. This game offers a fun and effective way to introduce and teach the skills.
Players win play money by giving Alison sound advice, and they can win extra money by selecting appropriate tone of voice and/or body language. The story line is contained in the "Advice Cards". The backs of the cards give the correct answer and, when appropriate, a rationale for the correct answer. Included with the game is a color poster listing the communication skills. Teachers are encouraged to put up the poster in the classroom and keep it up in subsequent classes for the purpose of continued reinforcement of the communication skills. A "Teachers Materials" booklet is included with complete lesson plans.
Grades 5 - 8 (also high interest material for older special needs students).
